Never Put People on Hold (longer than necessary)

I wish this rule could be “never ever put people on hold” but I understand that’s a little unreasonable. hold music triggers the inner Hulk in all of us to swell with rage. Blame Pavlov’s dog or who ever you’d like to blame, but customers are conditioned to despise hold music. It makes us feel ignored, unimportant, and irritable. That little hold button should be avoided as much as possible. Read More.

What's Your Yellow Page Exit Strategy?

    Last updated 1 year ago

Earlier this week AT&T ditched the Yellow Page part of their business, selling off the majority stake to Cerberus Capital Management. The only surprising part of this story was that an investment firm was willing to buy into this declining business. Last year AT&T had to take a $2.9 Billion write-down on the Yellow Page aspect of their business, that single write-down was worth more than the $950 million they received for selling out this year.

What does this news have to do with your business? Well, it's a sign of the times: another nail in the coffin for a dying industry. The trouble is - you may have brought in a good amount of business with Yellow Page advertising. You might even have built your business by dominating the Yellow Page listings. But, now that the era is ending it's time to consider alternatives. After all, you still need business and you need advertising that delivers results.

So what's your Yellow Page exit strategy? It depends on your target market. If you're trying to attract millennials, you might want to reconsider spending anything in the Yellow Pages but if you have an older audience you could start planning a longer three-year exit plan. It really depends on how much value you're still getting.

There is one thing all local business will miss with the end of the Yellow Page era - Simplicity! It was much easier to design an ad and pay a set fee every month to be listed prominently in your category. Now a ton of acronyms and internet phrases are being thrown at you: SEO, SEM, social media, mobile, banner, web design, reviews. On and on. Exhausting, and ever-changing it might be, but it's time to plan for the future. It's time to get and keep the most business you can in a technology driven society.

How to Explain to My Mom What I Do For a Living

    Last updated 1 year ago

As my mom was introducing me to her old college friends over the weekend I realized online marketing shouldn't be brain surgery. Understanding how to get in front of local customers should be easy.

Local customers are searching for your business online. There are two ways to show up in search results: organic listings and paid listings. ReachLocal has the best platform for optimizing paid listings based on technology. The technology makes sure your money is being spent on the keywords bringing you phone calls and web events.

Yeah simplicity! Local Customers -> Searching Online -> Technology -> More Calls. That's how ReachLocal can help your business.
